Hydration Matters: Are You Drinking Enough Water?

Staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support your health. Water helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, support digestion, and keep your body functioning normally.

Signs You May Need More Fluids

Thirst is an obvious sign, but dehydration can also show up as:

  • Dry mouth or lips
  • Dark yellow urine
  • Headache
  • Tiredness or low energy
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Urinating less often than usual

How Much Water Do You Need?

There isn’t one perfect amount for everyone. Your fluid needs can change depending on your body size, activity level, diet, medications, health conditions, and the weather.

A useful everyday habit is to drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re extremely thirsty. Water is an excellent choice, but other beverages and water-rich foods can also contribute to your fluid intake.

Simple Ways to Stay Hydrated

Keep water within reach, drink more when exercising or spending time in hot weather, and consider having a drink with each meal. If you’re losing fluids because of vomiting, diarrhea, heavy sweating, or illness, you may need additional fluids and electrolytes.

When to Get Help

Severe dehydration can require medical attention. Seek medical care if you experience severe weakness, confusion, fainting, an inability to keep fluids down, or very little or no urination.

Small habit, big impact: Make hydration part of your daily routine and pay attention to what your body is telling you.
